The underpainting of What It Feels Like to Unspool is completely different from what is depicted now. There was a tightness, a rigidity, and, honestly, a boringness to the painting. I went for a dog walk, breathed some fresh air, and came back more open and loose. I closed my eyes, which is something I often do to turn off my critical mind, and just made marks. The title of this piece speaks to the bodily feeling that occurred in its making, an unspooling of tension and control that was not helpful and a relinquishing to more openness and risk-taking that brought it to completion.
